Velvet Revolver – Dirty Little Thing

Song

"Dirty Little Thing" is a hard rock song by the supergroup Velvet Revolver, released as the fourth and final single off the band's debut album Contraband.

The song was a top-ten hit on rock radio, although it did not repeat the number one success achieved by their previous two singles, "Slither" and "Fall to Pieces".

History

Before Scott Weiland and Dave Kushner joined the band, the band was slated to include Josh Todd and Keith Nelson from the band Buckcherry. "Dirty Little Thing" was written during the time with them. Suddenly, Slash decided to boot the two from the band, but Nelson was given songwriting credit.

The song has recently been the subject of a plagiarism dispute. Tony Newton formerly of rock band Dirty Deeds recently settled with Velvet Revolver after successfully proving that the main riff of "Dirty Little Thing" is a "carbon copy" of the riff in Dirty Deeds song "Cyber Babe".

Song composition

The song's lyrics center around a girl who lives a crazy life involving sex, drugs and alcohol. The song opens with bass riffs from Duff McKagan and then the guitar enters, playing major chords. It has a string chorus and a guitar solo by Slash. The song's structure and sound is very similar to the opening track on Contraband, "Sucker Train Blues".

Music video

The band is playing in the inside of a train, where there are a lot of women and gambling. The inside of the train is live action film, whereas the outside is animated. This train goes through various places such as San Francisco, Las Vegas, and finishing in Los Angeles, by the end of the video, the train car starts losing its fuselage, causing the band to turn animated.

The camera then zooms out to reveal the train on a woman's hip. At the end of the video, the woman takes her position to match the cover on Contraband. The video was originally intended to be for Contraband's first track "Sucker Train Blues"; however, the idea was turned down on label's imposition, which opted to release "Dirty Little Thing" in its place.

Il disco ha debuttato immediatamente alla posizione numero 1 nella Billboard e ha riscosso molto successo soprattutto da parte della critica.

Artist

I Velvet Revolver sono stati un gruppo rock statunitense formatosi nel 2003 e composto da tre ex componenti dei Guns N' Roses (il chitarrista Slash, il bassista Duff McKagan e il batterista Matt Sorum), dall'ex frontman degli Stone Temple Pilots Scott Weiland e da Dave Kushner, chitarrista della band hardcore punk Wasted Youth.

Storia

I tre "ex-guns" si ritrovarono a suonare insieme quasi per caso e decisero di formare un nuovo gruppo quando si ritrovarono al funerale di Randy Castillo. A loro si unì in primis Kushner, dopodiché fu selezionato il cantante Scott Weiland (proveniente dagli Stone Temple Pilots) in seguito a una serie di provini.

Prima di adottare il nome definitivo Velvet Revolver, scelsero temporaneamente il nome The Project. Pubblicarono due album: Contraband, uscito l'8 giugno 2004 (dal quale fu estratto il singolo Fall To Pieces) e Libertad, uscito il 3 luglio 2007. Quest'ultimo ricevette dalla nota rivista Rolling Stone una critica abbastanza positiva (3,5 stelle su 4).

Il 2 aprile 2008 Scott Weiland venne allontanato dal gruppo, pare per via dei suoi continui problemi con sostanze stupefacenti, e la band intraprese, senza successo, una serie di audizioni nel tentativo di trovare un nuovo frontman.

Soltanto il 12 gennaio 2012, in occasione dello show "Love You Madly: A Concert For John O'Brien" a Hollywood, i Velvet Revolver si riunirono con Scott Weiland.

Negli anni successivi la band fu accantonata in seguito alla reunion degli Stone Temple Pilots e all'intensa attività solista di Slash.

La sera del 3 dicembre 2015, Weiland venne trovato senza vita nel suo tour bus in Minnesota, dove si trovava per un concerto degli Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts.
