"Loverman" is the second single from the album Let Love In by Australian rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The song was also performed by American heavy metal band Metallica on their 1998 cover album Garage Inc. and Depeche Mode's Martin Gore in his 2003 solo album Counterfeit².

Cave said,

"Loverman" was a song we almost didn't do because it seemed like a very weak idea at the time of recording. It was supposed to be just a throwaway song about desire. I was squirming about how banal it was. I changed the whole atmosphere, so the guy who's the telling the story is weak and dysfunctional. I put in the bits where I spell out loverman. It was a great surprise to everyone."

Let Love In è un album di Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds pubblicato nel 1994 sotto Mute Records. È stato prodotto da Tony Cohen coi Bad Seeds e registrato negli studi londinesi di Harrow Road. Contiene la celeberrima canzone "Loverman" che molti altri artisti come Martin Lee Gore e i Metallica hanno reinterpretato personalmente.

I Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds sono un gruppo fondato nel 1983 dal cantautore australiano Nick Cave.

Storia del gruppo

La band nacque nel 1983, su iniziativa del cantante Nick Cave e del polistrumentista Mick Harvey, entrambi già membri della rock band The Birthday Party, scioltasi in quello stesso anno, con lo scopo di supportare la carriera solista, come cantautore, di Cave.

Ai due si aggiunsero il chitarrista Blixa Bargeld, membro della già nota band Einstürzende Neubauten, il chitarrista Hugo Race e il bassista Barry Adamson. Inizialmente la band si esibì col nome The Cavemen, cambiandolo dopo poco in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Nick Cave, all'anagrafe Nicholas Edward Cave (Warracknabeal, 22 settembre 1957), è un cantautore, compositore, scrittore, sceneggiatore e attore australiano.

Grazie ad una serie di notevoli album e intense esibizioni dal vivo, ha coniato uno stile lirico e musicale inconfondibile, che lo ha imposto come una delle figure più influenti e carismatiche della musica contemporanea.

Dagli esordi post-punk ai lavori recenti, più vicini al cantautorato, Cave ha sviluppato una personalissima rielaborazione dei generi cardine della musica nata negli Stati Uniti (blues, gospel, country), affrontati con lo spirito cupo e sperimentale della new wave e del gothic rock, anche grazie alla sua caratteristica voce gutturale da baritono.

I suoi testi, attraversati da una forte tensione religiosa e da un costante senso di apocalisse imminente, affrontano tematiche quali il ruolo del divino nella vita dell'uomo, la ricerca della redenzione, l'angoscia esistenziale e l'amore perduto.
