Background and composition

The song uses a moon motif, which Young has mentioned as being very important to him and having quasi-religious undertones. It is a tribute to his wife Pegi Young, and the two are dancing in a bar in the music video. Linda Ronstadt provides the backing vocals.

Rolling Stone ranked "Harvest Moon" as the #37 all time Neil Young song. Allmusic's Matthew Greenwald strongly praised the song, stating that the song epitomized the album and

"the power of nature and music, as well as a feeling of celebrating lifetime love are the focal points here, and Young captures it all in his typically literate, artless style."

Greenwald praised the melody as

"positively gorgeous, and it's one that could have easily framed a heavier song."

"Classic Rock Review" called it an "absolute masterpiece of a title song" that

"celebrates longevity in relationships and love affairs with a flawless melody backed by a perfect music arrangement."

They went on to say that

"from the upfront acoustic riffing to the picked steel guitar, subtleties of ethereal sounds, soft brush strokes on the drums, and beautiful background vocals, this song captures the essence of beauty and romance as well any song ever."

È un ritorno ad atmosfere più rilassate e viene considerato il seguito ideale di Harvest dopo 20 anni esatti, come suggeriscono il titolo e la presenza della backing band The Stray Gators riformatasi per l'occasione.

Convalescente da una forma acuta di acufene sopraggiunta all'epoca della registrazione dell'album Ragged Glory e del successivo tour (che produsse l'album dal vivo Weld), Young era determinato nel voler fare ritorno in studio. Tornato a Nashville, e raggiunto dal compatriota Ben Keith, Young mise da parte la chitarra elettrica, per ritornare alle atmosfere acustiche folk rock e country di album come Harvest, Comes a Time e Old Ways.

Neil Percival Young (Toronto, 12 novembre 1945) è un cantautore e chitarrista canadese naturalizzato statunitense.

Dopo aver debuttato giovanissimo con la storica formazione dei Buffalo Springfield e aver raggiunto il successo nel supergruppo Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil si è imposto come uno dei più carismatici e influenti cantautori degli anni settanta, contribuendo a ridefinire la figura del songwriter con album come After the Gold Rush e il vendutissimo Harvest.

Artista solitario e tormentato, capace di passare con disinvoltura dalla quiete della ballata acustica alla brutalità della cavalcata rock, per l'approccio volutamente "grezzo" che contraddistingue tanto i suoi dischi quanto i suoi concerti è stato considerato da alcuni un precursore del punk, mentre la ruvida passione delle sue performance ha spinto tanto la critica quanto gli appassionati e gli stessi musicisti ad acclamarlo negli anni novanta padrino del grunge.

È stato inoltre un personaggio determinante per l'evoluzione di generi come l'alternative country e l'alternative rock in generale.

Tratti inconfondibili del suo stile sono la voce acuta e nasale, la chitarra "sporca" e cacofonica, i testi introspettivi e malinconici (specie nella cosiddetta Trilogia del dolore, culminata nell'album Tonight's the Night, da molti ritenuto il primo concept album della storia del rock a misurarsi con temi quali il dolore e la perdita) nonché l'immancabile camicia di flanella, divenuta negli anni un autentico status symbol alternativo.

Pur essendo nato in Canada, il cantautore ha vissuto gran parte della sua vita negli Stati Uniti, assumendone tuttavia la cittadinanza solo nel 2020.
