Song

"Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" is a song by the American rock band Pearl Jam. The song is the tenth track on the band's second studio album, Vs. (1993). Although credited to all members of Pearl Jam, it was primarily written by vocalist Eddie Vedder.

The length of the song's title was a reaction by the band to the fact that most of its songs featured one-word titles. The song is often referred to simply as "Elderly Woman" or "Small Town" by the band and its fans.

Origin and recording

When discussing how he initially came up with "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town", vocalist Eddie Vedder stated that "it was so quick." He elaborated further:

We were recording the second record, and we stayed in this house in San Francisco, and I was outside the house in my own world and the little outhouse had a small room. I'm talking the size of a bathroom. I was able to fit a Shure Vocal Master, which is a 1960s PA, and two big towers of PA and a little amp and a 4 track.

I slept in there too. I remember waking up one morning and playing pretty normal chords that sounded good, and I put on the vocal master to hear myself and it came out right quick. I don't even think I scribbled the lyrics down. It took 20 minutes. Stone was sitting outside reading the paper, and he was like "I really like that." So we recorded it that day.

It's kind of about a lady, and she's getting on in years, and she's stuck in this small town. Small towns fascinate me: You either struggle like hell to get out, to some people want to stay 'cause then they're the big fish in the small pond, and then others just kind of get stuck there.

So here she is working in this little place, and then an old flame comes in, and he's probably driving a nice car and looking kind of sharp—not a fancy car, but he's moved on. And then she sees him, and at first she doesn't even remember who he is, and then she realizes who it is. She's just too embarrassed to say 'hello'.

Vs. è il secondo album in studio del gruppo musicale statunitense Pearl Jam, pubblicato il 19 ottobre 1993 dalla Epic Records.

Storia

Il nome originale dell'album doveva essere Five Against One, ma venne poi scelto Vs. poco prima della pubblicazione (le prime copie dell'album furono stampate senza titolo). I primi testi vennero scritti durante il tour di Ten nei tempi vuoti e nei momenti di tensione. Nel periodo in cui Vs. prendeva forma, il mito dei Nirvana stava ormai tramontando per la tossicodipendenza di Kurt Cobain.

I Pearl Jam stavano raggiungendo il livello della band di Aberdeen e con questo disco la superarono, infatti il confronto con In Utero dei rivali si concluse con una decisa vittoria della band di Vedder. Vs. vendette, nella sola prima settimana, 950.000 copie, In Utero 180.000.

Nonostante le notevoli vendite, i Pearl Jam decisero di non sfruttare la spinta mediatica di MTV, non producendo alcun videoclip (decisione mantenuta sino a Yield), nonostante la presenza di singoli di discreto successo. Abbasseranno (dopo una battaglia legale) anche i prezzi dei biglietti dei propri concerti per renderli più accessibili ai fan.

Descrizione

Questo è considerato uno degli album più introspettivi dei Pearl Jam, ritroviamo insicurezze e rimorsi sul passato in Dissident e Indifference, la prima molto più veloce della seconda; la stranissima W.M.A., un pezzo contro la polizia che ha al suo interno l'uso di percussioni tribali. Non mancano poi dei pezzi quasi punk come Go, Animal e Blood.

I Pearl Jam sono un gruppo musicale grunge/rock alternativo statunitense, formatosi a Seattle nel 1990.

Sono stati tra i gruppi più famosi e di successo degli anni novanta: in carriera hanno venduto oltre 60 milioni di copie di cui 30 milioni soltanto negli Stati Uniti. Nonostante il loro stile differisca molto da gruppi quali i Nirvana e gli Alice in Chains, caratterizzati rispettivamente da profonde influenze punk e metal, hanno creato una di quelle che sono considerate le tre vie del grunge, insieme alle due precedenti, più affine al rock classico degli anni settanta.

Secondo la rivista Rolling Stone, il gruppo «spese la maggior parte degli anni novanta ad allontanare la propria fama» per via del loro atteggiamento anti-commerciale.

I Pearl Jam sono stati inseriti nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nel 2017, il primo anno in cui il gruppo era eleggibile.

Tuttora in piena attività, il gruppo raccoglie consensi di critica e di pubblico, continuando a influenzare numerosi gruppi rock contemporanei.
