Song

"The Wolf" is a song by English rock band Mumford & Sons. It was released as the second single from their third studio album Wilder Mind on 9 April 2015 and charted in multiple countries. The official music video for the song was uploaded on 30 June 2015 to the band's Vevo channel on YouTube.

Composition

"The Wolf" is an alternative rock and garage rock song. The song displays the band's change in sound from heavily folk-inspired to more electric instruments. Most noticeably, the use of the banjo is absent from this song as well as Wilder Mind, the album which the song is featured on.

Music video

The official music video for the song, lasting three minutes and fifty-five seconds, was uploaded on 30 June 2015 to the band's Vevo channel on YouTube. Directed by Marcus Haney, the video takes place at the 2015 Bonnaroo Music Festival as the band explores its sights and sounds.

It also showcases the headlining performance by the band. In the video the band members are dressed in various costumes; Marcus Mumford can be seen wearing a Robin Hood costume, Ted Dwane in giant chicken costume, Winston Marshall in a wedding dress and Ben Lovett in a fox costume. Actor Ed Helms can also be seen in the video; the actor performed at the festival that year alongside Dierks Bentley.

Critical reception

The single has received positive critical reception. Sputnikmusic labeled the song as a "massive highlight" from Wilder Mind as well as a "beautiful form of alternative rock." Rolling Stone ranked "The Wolf" at number 43 on its annual year-end list to find the best songs of 2015.

Wilder Mind è il terzo album in studio del gruppo britannico Mumford & Sons. Annunciato il 2 marzo 2015, l'album è prodotto da James Ford ed è caratterizzato da un sound molto diverso rispetto ai precedenti lavori della band, con un ampio uso di chitarre elettriche e batteria.

Il 20 settembre 2013 il gruppo annunciò un periodo di pausa dai concerti e dalle registrazioni in studio per una "notevole quantità di tempo", e il tastierista Ben Lovett confessò a Rolling Stone che non ci sarebbero state attività legate ai Mumford & Sons nel prossimo futuro, affermando che:

Questo è quanto abbiamo in programma al momento, di fare molto poco, almeno per quanto riguarda la band. Ci riposeremo un po'.

Nel dicembre 2013 il bassista Ted Dwane affermò che il gruppo si sarebbe riunito a febbraio 2014 per scrivere nuova musica. Il 20 luglio 2014 Ben Lovett confermò che il gruppo era al lavoro su un nuovo album a Londra. Il 2 marzo 2015, tramite il sito ufficiale, la band ha comunicato il titolo dell'album e la data di uscita.

Il primo singolo, Believe, è stato pubblicato il 9 marzo. Il secondo singolo, The Wolf, è stato trasmesso il 9 aprile da BBC Radio 1 e pubblicato poco dopo in versione digitale. Il 20 aprile è stato pubblicato il terzo singolo, Snake Eyes, seguito da Hot Gates, pubblicato il 29 aprile, da Tompkins Square Park il 4 maggio.

I Mumford & Sons sono un gruppo musicale indie folk formatosi nel 2007 a Londra, composto da Marcus Mumford (voce, chitarra, batteria), Ben Lovett (voce, tastiere, pianoforte, fisarmonica) Winston Marshall (voce, chitarra, banjo, basso) e Ted Dwane (voce, basso, contrabasso, batteria).

Stile musicale e influenze

Mumford & Sons sono stati descritti dal The Hollywood Reporter e Forbes come un gruppo folk rock. Hanno iniziato utilizzando strumentazione di tipo bluegrass e folk, con gli strumenti di base di chitarra acustica, banjo, pianoforte e un contrabbasso, suonato con uno stile ritmico riconducibile a rock alternativo e folk.

Nel documentario Big Easy Express, Marcus Mumford riconosce l'influenza degli Old Crow Medicine Show :

"Ho sentito la musica degli Old Crow quando avevo, più o meno, 16 o 17 anni e davvero mi ha spinto, verso la musica folk, e il bluegrass. Ho ascoltato Bob Dylan, ma non mi sono davvero avventurato nel mondo del country così tanto."

Mumford riconosce che "la band li ha ispirati a prendere il banjo e iniziare le loro ormai famose serate country a Londra." Ketch Secor, il frontman degli Old Crow, concorda: "Quei ragazzi hanno colto il messaggio e ci hanno fatto carriera."

Emmylou Harris è stata "tra gli artisti che hanno aiutato Mumford e i compagni di band Ben Lovett, Ted Dwane e Winston Marshall a scoprire il loro amore per la musica roots americana, iniziando con "O Brother, Where Art You?" la famosa colonna sonora (...) che alla fine li ha portati a conoscere gli Old Crow Medicine Show e poi ad immergersi profondamente nei suoni d'altri tempi, dal passato a lungo trascurato dell'America."
