The Killing Moon è un singolo pubblicato nel 1984 dal gruppo post punk inglese di Echo & the Bunnymen, estratto dal loro quarto album Ocean Rain.

Fu tra i loro maggiori successi commerciali raggiungendo il 9º posto nella classifica inglese.

The chords of the song were based on David Bowie's "Space Oddity", played backwards. The arrangement of the song was partially inspired by balalaika music that Les Pattinson and Will Sergeant had heard in Russia. Guitar solo had been recorded separately by Sergeant whilst tuning up and was inserted in the song at the suggestion of producer David Lord.

The strings on the track are a combination of Adam Peters' cello and keyboards played by the producer.

Ocean Rain è il quarto album degli Echo & the Bunnymen, pubblicato nel 1984 dalla Korova nel Regno Unito e dalla Sire Records negli Stati Uniti.

Dall'album sono stati tratti i singoli The Killing Moon che fu successo planetario, Silver e Seven Seas.

Nel 2003 l'album è stato ristampato con otto brani in aggiunta, nel 2008 è stata pubblicata dalla Rhino Records in una edizione speciale in 2 dischi di cui il secondo è la registrazione del concerto tenuto al Royal Albert Hall il 19 luglio 1983.

Gli Echo & the Bunnymen sono un gruppo musicale britannico post-punk formatosi a Liverpool nel 1978.

Inizialmente il gruppo era composto da Ian McCulloch, Will Sergeant e Les Pattinson e successivamente dal batterista Pete De Freitas. Sono diventati famosi per album come Heaven Up Here, Porcupine e Ocean Rain in cui è contenuta la canzone The Killing Moon.
