Song

"The Moonshiner" is a folk song with disputed origins. It is catalogued as Roud Folk Song Index No. 4301. Some believe that the song originated in America, then was later made famous in Ireland, while others claim that it was the other way around. The Clancy Brothers stated on their recording that the song is of Irish origin, but again, this is disputed.

Delia Murphy was singing it in Ireland from the late 1930s. However, its first American appearance was recorded in Carl Sandberg's 1927 The American Songbag, which credits the Combs family of Kentucky for the collection of the song going at least as far back as the turn of the century. The minor key arrangement is credited therein to Alfred George Wathall.

In 1963, Bob Dylan recorded "Moonshiner", which was released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991. While this bears resemblance to the 1930s recordings of Henson and Kazee, both of those versions include the "I always stay sing single" segment not present in the Sandberg version or in Dylan's, and neither include Dylan's "World's just a bottle" segment which appears with Rolf Cahn's Folkways recording in 1959 and later in Van Ronk's (1964).

The song has also been performed by Elliott Smith, Cat Power, Rumbleseat, Cast Iron Filter, Jalan Crossland, Peter Rowan, Railroad Earth, Bob Forrest, Roscoe Holcomb, Uncle Tupelo, Jeffrey Foucault, The Tallest Man On Earth, Tim Hardin, Charlie Parr, Punch Brothers, Redbird, Robert Francis, Scorpios, Dave Van Ronk, əkoostik hookah, Moriarty, Clay Parker & Jodi James, Lost Dog Street Band, David Bromberg,and Parsonsfield.

In the movie Deliverance, actor/musician Ronny Cox plays and sings the "religion when I die" stanza on his acoustic guitar around the first night's campfire.

Album

The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 is a box set by Bob Dylan issued on Columbia Records. It is the first installment in Dylan's Bootleg Series, comprising material spanning the first three decades of his career, from 1961 to 1989. It has been certified with a gold record by the RIAA as of August 1997, and peaked at No. 49 on the Billboard 200 and No. 32 in the UK.

Bob Dylan, pseudonimo di Robert Allen Zimmerman (Duluth, 24 maggio 1941), è un cantautore, compositore e poeta statunitense.

Distintosi anche come scrittore, poeta, e conduttore radiofonico, si è imposto come una delle più importanti figure a livello mondiale in campo musicale, in quello della cultura di massa e in quello della letteratura.

Oltre ad aver di fatto creato la figura del cantautore contemporaneo, a Dylan si devono, tra le altre cose, l'ideazione del folk-rock (in particolare con l'album Bringing It All Back Home, del 1965), il primo singolo di successo ad avere una durata non commerciale (gli oltre 6 minuti della celeberrima Like a Rolling Stone, del 1965) e il primo album doppio della storia del rock (Blonde on Blonde, del 1966).

Il video promozionale del brano Subterranean Homesick Blues (1965) è considerato da alcuni il primo videoclip in assoluto. L'album Great White Wonder(1969) ha lanciato il fenomeno dei bootleg, mentre la tripla antologia Biograph (1985) è considerata capostipite dei box set.

Tra i molti riconoscimenti che gli sono stati conferiti vanno menzionati il Grammy Award alla carriera nel 1991, il Polar Music Prize (ritenuto da alcuni equivalente del premio Nobel in campo musicale) nel 2000, il Premio Oscar nel 2001 (per la canzone Things Have Changed, dalla colonna sonora del film Wonder Boys, per la quale si è aggiudicato anche il Golden Globe), il Premio Pulitzer nel 2008, la National Medal of Arts nel 2009, la Presidential Medal of Freedom nel 2012 e la Legion D'Onore nel 2013. Il 13 ottobre 2016 gli è stato conferito il Premio Nobel per la letteratura.

Prima di lui solo George Bernard Shaw era riuscito a vincere sia un Nobel (per la letteratura, nel 1925) che un Oscar (per la miglior sceneggiatura non originale, nel 1938)

La rivista Rolling Stone lo inserisce al secondo posto nella lista dei 100 miglior artisti, al settimo in quella dei 100 migliori cantanti e nel 2015, al primo nella lista dei 100 migliori cantautori.

Nel corso degli anni Dylan ha ampliato e personalizzato il suo stile musicale arrivando a toccare molti generi diversi come country, blues, gospel/spiritual, rock and roll, rockabilly, jazz e swing, ma anche musica popolare inglese, scozzese e irlandese.
