Song

"Myth" is a song by American dream pop band Beach House, from the band's fourth studio album, Bloom. The song was released as a single on March 26, 2012. The song surfaced on the band's website on March 7, 2012, before its commercial release.

Critical reception

"Myth" received very positive reviews from contemporary music critics. The song was chosen upon release as Pitchfork Media's "Best New Track". Larry Fitzmaurice stated that, "On a surface level, there's no mistaking Myth for a Beach House song.

All the sonic elements that have travelled with the Baltimore dream-pop duo during their steady ascent over the last five years are intact: Alex Scally's narcotic guitar, a steady backbeat, and Victoria Legrand's smoky ache of a voice. What sets "Myth" as another sonic evolution for Beach House, then, is all in the details."

Fitzmaurice continues by saying, "The layers of echo surrounding Legrand's voice during its chorus, as well as the gauzy glow wrapped around everything, give the impression that the airy expansiveness of 2010's Teen Dream has contracted, but somehow the sound is just as "big", if not bigger, than before.

"What comes after this momentary bliss?" Legrand croons at one point. Hopefully, we'll find out soon enough."

Bloom è il quarto album discografico del gruppo musicale statunitense Beach House, pubblicato nel maggio 2012.

Il disco

Il disco è stato registrato presso il Sonic Ranch di Tornillo (Texas) ed è coprodotto da Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead), che aveva già prodotto il precedente album Teen Dream (2010). Il mixaggio è stato effettuato agli Electric Lady Studios di New York.

La prima canzone pubblicata dell'album è stata Myth, resa disponibile sul sito della band il 6 marzo 2012. Due giorni dopo è stata annunciata la data di pubblicazione del disco. Una seconda traccia, ossia Lazuli, è stata pubblicata dalla Record Store Day come singolo nel mese di aprile del 2012. Il video di questa canzone (diretto da Allen Cordell) è stato diffuso il 6 giugno seguente. Infine il 19 marzo 2013 è stato pubblicato un videoclip per il brano Whishes, diretto da Eric Wareheim del duo comico Tim and Eric.

Per quanto riguarda la critica, l'album è stato accolto positivamente: ha collezionato 4/5 stelline per AllMusic, mentre è stato recensito positivamente anche da NME (voto 7/10), molto positivamente da Pitchfork (voto 9.1/10) e PopMatters (voto 10/10).

Bloom si è posizionato alla prima posizione delle classifiche "Indipendent Albums" e "Alternative Albums" negli Stati Uniti. Inoltre ha debuttato alla posizione numero 7 della Billboard 200. Nel Regno Unito si è classificato alla 15ª posizione della Official Albums Chart.

Biografia

La storia dei Beach House comincia nel 2004, quando Victoria Legrand, nata a Parigi ma cresciuta a Philadelphia, nipote del compositore francese Michel Legrand e della cantante Christine Legrand, lascia la scuola di teatro e decide di trasferirsi a Baltimora. Qui incontra Alex Scally, studente di geologia e nasce così il progetto musicale, fondato inizialmente su suoni vintage.

L'approccio musicale del gruppo si fonderà ben presto su una matrice intrigante e avvolgente, che li farà accostare al mondo del dream pop.
