Song

"Nutshell" is a song by Alice in Chains that originally appeared on the band's 1994 extended play Jar of Flies.

"Nutshell" is also known for having opened the band's performance on MTV Unplugged in 1996. This rendition of the song was included on the compilation album Music Bank (1999), as well as The Essential Alice in Chains (2006). Since 2011, guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell dedicates "Nutshell" to Alice in Chains' late original members Layne Staley and Mike Starr during the band's concerts.

Lyrics

The lyrics were written by vocalist Layne Staley, and the music was written by bassist Mike Inez, guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney.

Bassist Mike Inez said of "Nutshell" when asked what song makes him think of Layne Staley the most:

I think the No. 1 for me is "Nutshell." Layne was very honest with his songwriting. And in "Nutshell," he really put everything in a nutshell for everybody. That song still gets me choked up whenever I play it. I get a little teary-eyed, and sometimes when we're doing the arena runs especially, they'll have some video footage of Layne.

And I look and see me and Jerry [Cantrell, vocals and guitar] and Sean [Kinney, drums] looking the wrong way. We're not looking at the audience, we're looking back at Layne, and it's pretty cool that there's still that song for us. Yeah, it's just a sad thing.

Music

Jon Pareles of New York Times commented that the arrangements on "Nutshell" recalled those of Canadian musician Neil Young.

Reception

Although never released as a single, it is one of Alice in Chains' best-known songs. The song is notable for its emotional acoustic instrumentation and its electric guitar solo, as well as its dark lyrics dealing with loneliness, despair, and death. The lyrics are also thought to be an expression of Staley's frustration with lack of privacy.

It is considered a staple of 1990s alternative rock despite not hitting a single U.S. Billboard chart or any charts around the world.

In 2013, "Nutshell" was ranked No. 9 on Rolling Stone's readers' poll "The 10 Saddest Songs of All Time". In 2014, the song was ranked No. 5 on Loudwire's "10 Best Alice In Chains Songs" list.

Live performances

Alice in Chains performed the song for the first time at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City on September 22, 1993. The band performed an acoustic version of "Nutshell" for its appearance on MTV Unplugged on April 10, 1996. It was the opening song of the concert and was included on the Unplugged live album and home video release. The Unplugged concert marked the last time the band performed the song with Layne Staley.

Since 2011, Jerry Cantrell dedicates "Nutshell" to Layne Staley and Mike Starr during Alice In Chains' concerts with new vocalist William DuVall. During their concert at the Hellfest Open Air Festival in Clisson, France on June 24, 2018, Cantrell dedicated the song to his longtime friend and Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, who died two days before the concert.

Jar of Flies è il terzo EP del gruppo statunitense Alice in Chains, pubblicato il 25 gennaio 1994 dalla Columbia Records.

È stato il primo EP della storia a raggiungere la posizione numero uno nella classifica statunitense Billboard 200.

Il disco

A detta del chitarrista Jerry Cantrell, venne scritto "in poco più di una settimana di alcool e solitudine". Venne registrato nella settimana tra il 7 ed il 14 settembre del 1993 al London Bridge Studio di Seattle ed è considerato da molti come un piccolo capolavoro degli anni novanta, anche se il sound è molto distante da quello duro e aggressivo tipico delle altre produzioni della band di Seattle.

È il primo lavoro completo che vede il contributo di Mike Inez al basso, che firma la musica di quattro dei sette brani, dopo aver debuttato nel singolo What the Hell Have I?.

Ben tre dei sette brani sono stati estratti come singoli: No Excuses, un tributo di Jerry Cantrell alla sua complicata ma fraterna amicizia con il cantante Layne Staley, la suggestiva I Stay Away e Don't Follow. Altri brani sono comunque diventati dei classici, come Rotten Apple, ma soprattutto Nutshell, una delle canzoni più amate dai fan degli Alice in Chains. Per No Excuses e I Stay Away è stato anche girato un video.

Secondo quanto dichiarato da Layne Staley in un'intervista, il nome dell'album proviene da un esperimento che il chitarrista Jerry Cantrell vide alle scuole elementari. Vennero presi due vasi contenenti entrambi delle mosche, quelle contenute nel primo vaso vennero nutrite in eccesso, le altre vennero nutrite meno del necessario.

Inizialmente nel primo vaso le mosche fiorirono e si moltiplicarono prosperose, ma poi morirono a causa della sovrappopolazione. Al contrario la maggior parte delle mosche del secondo vaso sopravvisse per tutto l'anno.

I testi dei brani sono scritti dal cantante Layne Staley, ad eccezione del brano strumentale Whale & Wasp e dei brani No Excuses e Don't Follow, i cui testi sono opera di Jerry Cantrell.

Gli Alice in Chains sono un gruppo musicale grunge/alternative metal statunitense formatosi a Seattle nel 1987.

Insieme a Nirvana, Pearl Jam e Soundgarden sono una delle band di maggior successo del cosiddetto Seattle Sound sebbene, a differenza di queste formazioni, si ispirassero più all'heavy metal che non al punk rock o al rock psichedelico. Hanno a loro volta avuto un'influenza determinante su band quali Deftones, Godsmack, Staind, Drowning Pool, Queens of the Stone Age, Taproot, Seether e Adema.

Il gruppo ha venduto oltre trentacinque milioni di dischi nel mondo.

La morte di Staley

Il gruppo fece un'ultima comparsa pubblica, la prima in tre anni, con l'MTV Unplugged del 1996. Staley era visibilmente in cattive condizioni di salute, ma si sforzò molto per rielaborare i pezzi più duri della band in funzione della natura acustica dell'esibizione e cantò una sorprendente versione di Down in a Hole.

Staley sprofondò sempre più nella depressione, dalla quale non si sarebbe mai ripreso, quando nel 1996 la sua ragazza morì in seguito a un'endocardite batterica causata dall'uso di droga. Divenne estremamente solitario e raramente lasciava la sua casa di Seattle.

La band non si sciolse mai ufficialmente ma, nonostante i tentativi di Jerry Cantrell di mantenersi in contatto con lui e tenere il gruppo unito, apparve chiaro che Staley non sarebbe mai più ritornato. Cantrell cominciò una carriera da solista pubblicando un proprio album, Boggy Depot nel 1998.

L'ultima possibilità di vedere una riunione degli Alice in Chains si spense il 5 aprile 2002, quando Layne Staley morì nella sua casa per overdose di eroina e cocaina, esattamente 8 anni dopo la morte di un'altra icona dell'era grunge, Kurt Cobain dei Nirvana.

Dopo il decesso del cantante, i tre rimanenti membri intrapresero percorsi musicali differenti. Jerry Cantrell pubblicò Degradation Trip, sempre nel 2002, un album molto più maturo del precedente e che Cantrell dedicò totalmente al suo compagno deceduto. Inez e Kinney entrarono a far parte di un altro gruppo di stampo grunge, gli Spys4Darwin.
