Song

"Before You Accuse Me" (also known as "Before You Accuse Me (Take a Look at Yourself)") is a song written and recorded by American musician Bo Diddley in 1957.

It was released as the B-side to Diddley's "Say Bossman" and was included on his self-titled debut album in 1958. Backing Diddley on vocal and guitar are Jody Williams on guitar, Willie Dixon on bass, and Frank Kirkland on drums.

Bo Diddley è un album compilation del musicista rock and roll statunitense Bo Diddley. La raccolta include molti dei suoi pezzi più famosi ed influenti, pubblicati su singolo tra il 1955 e il 1958. La Chess Records pubblicò l'album nel 1958.

Nel 2012, il disco è stato inserito alla posizione numero 216 nella lista dei 500 migliori album di sempre redatta dalla rivista Rolling Stone, insieme al suo secondo album Go Bo Diddley (1959).

Artist

Ellas Otha Bates McDaniel, noto come Bo Diddley (McComb, 30 dicembre 1928 – Archer, 2 giugno 2008), è stato un cantautore, chitarrista, compositore polistrumentista statunitense, in particolare di musica Rock and roll.

Gli inizi e l'apprendistato

Nasce in una famiglia povera a McComb un paese del Mississippi dove, dopo la morte dei genitori, viene accudito dalla cugina della madre ovvero Gussie McDaniel. Comincia a studiare violino da giovanissimo per poi innamorarsi della chitarra ascoltando John Lee Hooker.

Nel 1943 all'età di 14 anni decise di formare una band chiamata Hip histers oppure Hip sters nonché in seguito Langley avenue jive catz dove aveva già scelto di chiamarsi Bo Diddley, un soprannome che nacque a scuola e che stava a significare bullo secondo la definizione slang dei neri. Dopo lo scioglimento della band si metterà a lavorare come camionista e infine intraprenderà una carriera di pugile che finirà a breve.

Ha un figlio, Ellas Anthony McDaniel (nato nel 1954), e una figlia, Tammy McDaniel (nata nel 1962). Nessuno dei due ha intrapreso la carriera musicale.

Successo

Viene contattato da Leonard Chess e Phil Chess per conto della Chess Records, etichetta discografica prestigiosa, con cui firma un contratto e nel 1955 esce il suo primo singolo intitolato col suo nome d'arte, Bo Diddley.

Si trattava di un rifacimento del brano Uncle John da lui precedentemente composto a cui fu cambiato il titolo per volontà di uno dei fratelli Chess. Il brano riscosse un buon successo (17º nella classifica di Billboard relativa al Rhythm'n Blues) e vendette 1 milione di copie, portando i germi di un nuovo ritmo.

Declino e rinascita

A partire dagli anni a venire la sua carriera subì una frenata, nonostante si mantenesse al centro dell'attenzione con i concerti in cui le esibizioni erano infuocate, soprattutto quando suonava la chitarra con i denti (cosa che in seguito Jimi Hendrix imiterà) e anche per la nuova leva che mostrava interesse nei suoi confronti riproponendo molti dei suoi brani.
