The National – Fake Empire

Song

"Fake Empire" is a song by Brooklyn-based indie rock band The National from their fourth studio album, Boxer. The song was released in June 2008 as the album's third and final single.

Production

"Fake Empire" was written by Bryce Dessner of The National. Commenting on the song's initial concept, he said,

"Conceptually I said I would love to write a song that was based on a certain polyrhythm, the four-over-three pattern, which is what you hear in the piano. It's something I, personally, have never heard in rock music. What's interesting is the song sounds like it's in four, but it's in three.

The harmonies and the way I'm playing the piano music are actually incredibly simple – sort of like "Chopsticks" simple – with this really weird rhythm. At the end we said, 'Oh, wouldn't it be cool if we had a horn fanfare?' so Padma [Newsome] wrote this very Steve Reichian minimalist horn fanfare."

Lyrical Interpretation

Lyrically, "Fake Empire" is a commentary about a generation lost to disillusion and apathy. Vocalist Matt Berninger further explained to The Quietus that it is about "where you can't deal with the reality of what's really going on, so let's just pretend that the world's full of bluebirds and ice skating."

Boxer è il quarto album discografico del gruppo musicale statunitense indie rock dei The National, pubblicato il 22 maggio 2007 dalla Beggars Banquet Records.

Il disco

Prodotto, come il precedente Alligator, da Peter Katis e dalla stessa band, il disco si avvale della collaborazione di Sufjan Stevens in due tracce.

Il brano Slow Slow contiene lo stesso testo di un'altra canzone della band, 29 Years, inserita nell'album The National.

Dall'album sono stati estratti 3 singoli: Mistaken for Strangers (aprile 2007, nei formati vinile 7" e CD), Apartment Story (novembre 2007, solo in formato 7") e Fake Empire (giugno 2008, solo digitale).

Un film-documentario intitolato A Skin, A Night è stato pubblicato circa un anno dopo il disco e contiene delle registrazioni relative al processo di realizzazione dell'album stesso. Il film è stato diretto da videomaker indipendente Vincent Moon.

La foto in copertina del disco è stata scattata da Abbey Drucker mentre il gruppo suonava il brano The Geese of Beverly Road, tratto da Alligator, al matrimonio del produttore Peter Katis.

Artist

I National sono un gruppo musicale indie rock formatosi a Cincinnati e attivo dal 1999. I testi della band sono tutti scritti e cantati da Matt Berninger, cantante con voce baritonale. Con lui nella band, due coppie di gemelli: Aaron e Bryce Dessner, Scott e Bryan Devendorf.

Al gruppo si unisce spesso Padma Newsome, cantante e tastierista dei Clogs, che cura gli arrangiamenti per gli archi e le tastiere.
