"Cold Contagious" is the fourth and final single from the band Bush's second studio album, Razorblade Suitcase (1996). Along with "Bonedriven", "Cold Contagious" is the only Bush single from 1994-1999 not to be included on the band's 2005 greatest hits compilation, The Best of '94–'99.

Style and lyrics

"Cold Contagious" features a sharp distorted sound and a heavy, dark drumbeat. The lyrics seem to be about a relationship breaking up, accompanied by a desire for revenge. "Cold Contagious" is unusually long among Bush songs—at about six minutes, it is the longest track Bush ever released, except for the song "Distant Voices," also on Razorblade Suitcase, and "Alien" on Sixteen Stone, which is the same length musically but has about thirty seconds of silence at the end. "Distant Voices" contains two hidden tracks. The radio edit of "Cold Contagious" is much shorter.

Steve Morse of Tampa Bay Times opined "Cold Contagious" displays a "Neil Young influence".

Music video

Directed by Mark Lebon in March and April 1997, the video was shot in West Palm Beach, Florida at the Days Inn Hotel (Hotel room used was 211), East Rutherford, New Jersey and in Madison Square Garden in New York. Dave Parsons' girlfriend is also in the video.

Album

Razorblade Suitcase is the second studio album by English rock band Bush, released on 19 November 1996 by Trauma and Interscope Records. The follow-up to their 1994 debut Sixteen Stone, it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London with engineer and producer Steve Albini. Its sound is more raw than that of its predecessor and has frequently been compared to Nirvana's In Utero (1993), which was also produced and engineered by Albini. The album is widely regarded as the last major grunge album of the 1990s.

Razorblade Suitcase debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 293,000 copies in its first week of sales in the United States. To date, it remains the only Bush album to top the Billboard 200. The twentieth anniversary of the album was marked with a reissue officially titled Razorblade Suitcase (In Addition) on 16 December 2016, including the remastered album and four rare bonus tracks: "Broken TV," "Old," "Sleeper" and "Bubbles."

Il disco

È caratterizzato da un suono un po' più dark del precedente, Sixteen Stone, il che ha indotto la critica a confronti fra Razorblade Suitcase e il terzo album dei Nirvana In Utero, sia perché entrambi sono arrivati dopo un album di grande successo, sia perché ambedue i gruppi si sono avvalsi della collaborazione di Steve Albini, produttore di entrambi gli album.

Per stessa ammissione del leader Gavin Rossdale, ai tempi la band era più impegnata ad emulare i Pixies, band alternative americana dei primi anni novanta, di cui Albini aveva registrato l'LP Surfer Rosa, mentre l'artwork di Razorblade Suitcase porta la firma di Vaughan Oliver e V23, che avevano curato anche l'artwork per Surfer Rosa.

Il titolo provvisorio dell'album era Ghost Medicine, ma fu cambiato per ragioni sconosciute. Il titolo Razorblade Suitcase proviene da un verso della traccia Synapse, contenuta nell'album.

Come Nevermind per i Nirvana, il precedente album dei Bush, Sixteen Stone, aveva conquistato un forte appeal radiofonico grazie alla sua impronta potente e melodica tipica del grunge, e perciò aveva venduto milioni di copie. Razorblade Suitcase, invece, si rivela un album molto più duro, abrasivo, sicuramente meno radio-friendly, e nonostante raggiunga la prima posizione nella top 200 di Billboard (Sixteen Stone si era fermato alla n.4), non riesce a ripetere il successo del precedente, specialmente negli USA.

Swallowed, primo singolo estratto dall'album, ottiene un grande successo in America, grazie alle sue connotazioni melodiche e ruvide al contempo e ai riff trascinanti della chitarra solista; costituisce un vero e proprio traino per l'intero album. Seguono Greedy Fly, uno dei pezzi più potenti dell'album, violenza rock dall'onda d'urto devastante, e la ballata Bonedriven. Un remix di Mouth verrà pubblicato sull'album Deconstructed ed otterrà un discreto successo.

I Bush sono un gruppo musicale inglese attivo dal 1992.

La loro formazione attuale è composta dal cantante e chitarrista ritmico Gavin Rossdale, dal batterista Robin Goodridge, dal chitarrista Chris Traynor e dal bassista Corey Britz.

Nel 1994, I Bush ebbero un grande successo con l'uscita del loro album di debutto, "Sixteen Stone", che ha ricevuto la certificazione di 6 dischi di platino dalla RIAA. Hanno venduto oltre 10 milioni di dischi negli Stati Uniti e 20 milioni stimati a livello mondiale. Nonostante il loro successo negli Stati Uniti, la band era meno conosciuta nel loro paese d'origine e ha goduto solo di un successo marginale.

I Bush hanno avuto numerosi singoli top ten nelle classifiche di Billboard e un album al primo posto con "Razorblade Suitcase" nel 1996. La band si sciolse nel 2002 ma si riformò nel 2010, e ha pubblicato quattro album da allora: "The Sea of Memories" (2011), "Man on the Run" (2014), "Black and White Rainbows" (2017) e "The Kingdom" (2020).
